Commuters in Orange County can anticipate improved conditions on the Thruway following the completion of a $36.6 million pavement improvement project. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the completion of work that focused on upgrading approximately 48 lane miles of I-87. This section of the road, running from Woodbury’s Exit 16 to Newburgh’s Exit 17, serves as a key route in the region’s infrastructure and is used by around 53,000 motorists each day.

According to the official announcement, Governor Hochul remarked, "Repaving the Thruway and keeping the road smooth for drivers is a critical investment given the important role the 570-mile superhighway serves in our transportation network and our state’s economy." She continued to emphasize New York State's commitment to delivering "smoother, safer roads across the state, improving the driving experience for commuters, commercial drivers and visitors."

The extensive project involved both full and partial depth repairs targeting the most deteriorated sections of the roadway. Crews also installed new guiderail, applied reflective line striping, and performed necessary upgrades to drainage and culverts. These safety improvements aim to enhance the driving experience and reduce the likelihood of road incidents. In an official statement, Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey said, "The completion of this Thruway project represents a commitment to improving the everyday travel experience for residents, visitors, and businesses alike."

The extensive work covered a 12.1-mile section of the highway, focusing on areas most in need of repair. According to details from the Governor's news release, these maintenance efforts are important because 85 percent of the Thruway’s base structure dates back to its original construction in the 1950s. Updating this aging infrastructure is essential for maintaining safe transit and supporting the region’s economic vitality.

For current traffic updates, motorists are encouraged to download the Thruway Authority’s mobile app, which provides real-time traffic and navigation assistance, or to use the interactive Traveler Map available online. Additionally, the Thruway Authority’s 2025-2029 Capital Plan allocates $2.7 billion for infrastructure and equipment improvements, representing a 38 percent increase from previous commitments to help maintain the Thruway as one of the safest and most cost-efficient toll roads in the country.
