Orange Park Mall, a familiar destination for families and friends in Clay County, is introducing a new measure this weekend designed to ensure a "safe, family-friendly environment." Starting today, visitors under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a guardian aged at least 21 years old on Fridays and Saturdays. Acknowledging a previous incident involving a large group of unaccompanied minors, mall officials in partnership with the Clay County Sheriff's Office are instituting the new Youth Supervision Policy, according to Action News Jax.
After reported disruptions, such as an unauthorized “pop-up party” in July, the mall resolved to avert similar situations by now requiring the adult presence. No arrests were made during the incident, though it did prompt concerns and initiated a response from the sheriff's office, speaking to News4Jax, affirmed their support and proactive stance in enforcing the new policy. Each adult will be able to supervise up to four minors, striking a balance between oversight and practicality.
General Manager Randy Bowman was quoted in a statement obtained by Jacksonville.com, "This policy reflects priorities identified in collaboration with the Clay County community.” Bowman's statement highlights a concerted effort by the mall's new owners, Second Horizon Capital, to enhance the mall's environment and amenities through community partnerships.
Parents, expecting a return to more family-oriented visits, seem to be lining up behind the change. "Families like to come, and it’s gotten a little wild lately, and I think that would make it more family-friendly," Carolyn Mooney told News4Jax. By setting these supervisory prerequisites, the mall and law enforcement aim to keep the space amenable to shoppers of all ages, crucial for a venue that has been a part of the community for over half a century.
As the weekend approaches, mall-goers and employees alike will be watching to see how this new policy influences the landscape of weekend shopping and socializing. The policy officially goes into effect at 4 p.m. today, Oct. 17, ushering in a new chapter for Orange Park Mall and its patrons.
