Residents in the Philadelphia area, along with parts of New Jersey, should prepare for minor coastal flooding as the National Weather Service has issued an advisory effective from 8 PM this evening until 1 AM EDT Thursday. NWS Philadelphia warns of up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, with the possibility of road closures due to flooding.
The advisory covers Gloucester, Camden, and Northwestern Burlington in New Jersey, as well as Delaware, Philadelphia, and Lower Bucks in Pennsylvania. Areas near the Delaware River at Philadelphia and Burlington are especially at risk, with predictions of the tide reaching up to 8.7 feet MLLW (Mean Lower Low Water) and 9.6 feet MLLW respectively, which will result in minor flooding conditions. "At this level, flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads along tidal waterways. Some partial or full road closures are possible," reports the National Weather Service.
The current weather forecast for Philadelphia indicates sunny conditions with a high of 71 degrees today, and clear skies extending into the night with lows around 51 degrees. The pleasant weather brings, northeast winds around 10 mph, with occasional gusts hitting as high as 20 mph. These clear conditions are expected to continue throughout the week, although residents should remain vigilant of the coastal flooding risks.
People are advised to not leave their vehicle in areas prone to tidal flooding and avoid driving through floodwaters, as this can lead to danger for individuals and potential damage to vehicles.
