In a heartfelt display of community service, the Pickerington High School North's (PHSN) Girls Volleyball team has partnered with OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist Hospital to create and donate blankets for mothers enduring the loss of a child through stillbirth. Highlighting an annual tradition of giving back, the initiative brought to the fore by former PHSN graduate and Labor & Delivery RN Jessie Groves-Tincher has struck deeply resonate chords for both the recipients and those offering the blankets, as reported by Pickerington School.
Having an intimate understanding of the hospital's needs and the community spirit embedded in the PHSN volleyball program, Groves-Tincher facilitated the connection that would see these student-athletes crafting something of profound significance. The blankets, designed to offer solace to grieving mothers, serve as tangible expressions of care and empathy. As stated in a Pickerington School interview, "For mothers experiencing loss, these handmade blankets serve as a way to wrap their babies with love and dignity, offering a moment of peace amid heartbreak."
April Boudreau, the PHSN Social Studies Teacher and Head Girls’ Volleyball Coach, recognized the profound impact of the gesture, noting that "The simple act of giving a blanket is more than just a gift of warmth—it provides solace during an unimaginably difficult time," as told to Pickerington School. This sentiment was echoed by the student-athletes, who found the experience transformative. "It makes me happy knowing our little act of kindness can change some of their lives," said PHSN Senior Addie Gosche, who participated in the making of the blankets.
Beyond the creation of the blankets, the student-athletes received words of appreciation from the healthcare staff at OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist Hospital, who recognized the depth of kindness and community support manifest in the students' efforts. "Your kindness and compassion are truly a gift. These blankets are more than just fabric; they are a symbol of hope and community," as stated by the hospital nurses in response to the students' efforts shared with Pickerington School.
Through this community project, PHSN's student-athletes demonstrated the broad reach of their influence - one that transcends the confines of the volleyball court and stretches into the realm of heartfelt community service. Moved to action by the plight of these mothers, these young individuals have shown that true strength lies in the willingness to support others, even amidst the darkest moments of loss. As Groves-Tincher added, according to Pickerington School, "In doing so, they demonstrated what it means to be part of a community: to use one’s hands, heart, and teamwork to bring hope where it is needed most." Her sentiments, underscoring the impact of the endeavor, also serve as a testament to the power of compassion in action.
