A Pinellas Park man was fatally shot by police after he attacked an officer with a knife during a confrontation at a short-term rental property. The incident, which unfolded yesterday morning in the 4300 block of 82nd Ave. N, began when the homeowner sought assistance in removing the renter who was refusing to leave upon the lease's end, FOX 13 News reported.
As the lease expired, the situation escalated when the renter, barricaded himself inside the home and refused to exit despite law enforcement's efforts, including attempts at negotiation over the phone. According to WTSP, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri shared that a "contact team" was dispatched with less-than-lethal beanbag guns and shields but the situation became deadly when the man lunged at the officers with a knife.
Cpl. Graham Fox was slashed in the shoulder before another officer fired several rounds, striking the man in the chest. Sheriff Gualtieri detailed the progression from less-lethal tactics to the fatal shooting, noting multiple commands were given for the man to drop the knife, which were met with a violent response.
The neighborhood, typically a quiet enclave, was shaken by the commotion and the heavy police presence. Long-time resident Knicole Miller shared her fright with Tampa Bay 28, saying, "nothing like this has happened here before." Her video captured officers' attempts to coax the renter out, announcing, "If you stay inside that residence, we are going to come in and take you to jail for a felony charge of armed criminal trespassing... get out of the residence now, unarmed, and you can leave here peacefully."
