The Pittsburgh International Airport is once again opening its virtual doors for its annual auction, but this year, the hammer falls online. Reflecting a continuing trend of digital transition amid the global marketplace, potential buyers will have the opportunity to place their bids electronically on an array of items ranging from the ordinary to the extraordinary. According to WPXI, the lost, misplaced, or abandoned treasures include, but are not limited to, snow plows, a hook truck, sweepers, and a bevy of decommissioned vehicles.
The allure of high-end finds seemingly knows no bounds, with items such as a Cartier women’s watch and a Louis Vuitton hat expected to quickly catch the eyes of eager bidders. For gamers, a PlayStation 4 is also on the block, alongside an assortment of electronics poised to go to the highest bidder. In an endeavor to keep the process transparent and accessible, the auction inventory can be physically viewed on October 24th at Joe R. Pyle's warehouse, as well as the airport’s Heavy Equipment Building, as detailed by a WTAE report. The same viewing opportunity is extended for the used airport equipment, which includes the snowplows and Ford Explorer Interceptors.
The online platform for this year’s auction could potentially enable a wider audience to participate, signaling an expanded reach beyond the local community that traditionally could have attended in person.
Interested parties who wish to take part in this unique auction will need to be swift, as the closing gavel is set to fall on Monday, October 27, at 5 p.m. However, those still keen to cast their bids just before the cut-off can rest assured that bidding is slated to continue just as long as new bids are placed.
