A Pittsburgh police officer sustained moderate head injuries after being struck by a stolen vehicle, which led to a police chase yesterday, as per a report from WPXI. The chase involved two vehicles believed to be stolen and commenced from Zone 6 into Zone 1, triggering a response spanned several neighborhoods.
Masked individuals honking their horns in the stolen cars grabbed the attention of the officers near Federal Street and Lafayette Avenue, leading to the confrontation that injured the officer. Both suspect vehicles fled the scene after one of the officers was hit, courtesy of the reckless actions of the suspects attempting to evade law enforcement.
After having been spiked near the 10th Street Bridge, one of the vehicles continued towards downtown until it finally stopped at the intersection of Boulevard of the Allies and Grant Street. Multiple suspects then exited the vehicle. According to Action News 4, four individuals associated with the heist were taken into custody at that location.
The second vehicle involved in the chase was discovered abandoned on Brutus Way in Pittsburgh's Sheraden neighborhood, and with no suspects around, it was towed for processing. A spokesperson for Pittsburgh Police confirmed the vehicle's connection to the earlier events, adding drying paint to the troubling tableau of yesterday's chase. Charges are expected soon as the investigation unfolds, the police added.
Local resident Mina Bray, caught amidst the pandemonium after the suspects' risky drive-by past the police station, expressed her concern about the safety of her six- and two-year-old nephews who witnessed the event. "That’s absolutely crazy," she told Action News 4. Pittsburgh Public Safety officials and SWAT were seen securing the area following the chase, highlighting the severity of the incident.
