The necessary expansion of the Triangle Expressway, a key connector in the Raleigh area, pushes forward with the Complete 540 project taking its next phase of construction into quiet suburban corners. As the North Carolina Turnpike Authority furthers its aim to link the existing I-540/I-87/U.S. 64/U.S. 264 interchange in Knightdale to the nexus of I-40/I-42/Toll N.C. 540 near Garner and Clayton, locals must brace for a spate of traffic reroutes. According to officials, specific disruptions are earmarked for the stretch of Rock Quarry Road between Auburn Knightdale Road and Old Baucom Road, as per the NCDOT website.
The planned closures for Rock Quarry Road, intended to be temporary and nocturnal, are scheduled to cleave an artery of traffic from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night between the dates of November 3 to November 7, albeit these dates might shift in response to the vagaries of construction timelines or the whims of weather. Motorists accustomed to the usual thoroughfare's availability will have to navigate alternative paths, routes demarcated by signage specifically designed to circumvent the excavation, the laying of asphalt, the hum of heavy machinery that characterizes the birth of roadways.
The detour plans have been duly laid out: for those needing to reach the northern section of Rock Quarry Road, the recommended path swings from Rock Quarry Road onto Old Baucom Road, then Brown Field Road and Battle Bridge Road before returning to Auburn Knightdale Road and right back onto Rock Quarry Road. The opposite southward detour mirrors this, with slight deviation—drivers are to steer left upon Auburn Knightdale, carry on to Battle Bridge Road, proceed to Brown Field Road, and then Old Baucom Road to eventually rejoin Rock Quarry Road. Navigating these detours could mean more time behind the wheel, an inconvenience that is, however, a necessary interlude to long-term infrastructural betterment.
