In a move that is sure to ripple through the alcoholic beverage industry in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has named Robert Eckels as the new Chair of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission; Eckels, a figure with a deep legal and political background, is now at the helm of the body responsible for the supervision and regulation of said industry throughout the Lone Star State, as confirmed in a recent announcement by the Office of the Texas Governor.
Eckels, who hails from Spring, Texas, is no stranger to the corridors of power, already a seasoned professional with a resume that includes six terms in the Texas State Legislature, a tenure as Harris County Judge, and advisory roles under President George W. Bush and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, his tenure at the Commission is set to expire on November 15, 2027 and his wealth of experience is expected to shape his stewardship of the commission.
His legal prowess is also extensive; Robert Eckels is an attorney of counsel to Husch Blackwell LLP with general counsel responsibilities at Greffex, Inc., and holds bar membership across Texas, New York, Colorado, and D.C., while also carrying the designation of a Certified Fraud Examiner and as a board leadership fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors, qualifications that speak to a robust legal understanding that he is likely to bring into his new role.
Outside of the courtroom, Eckels's commitment to public service and community involvement remains evident; he has previously served as chair of the Texas County and District Retirement System and was President of the Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association, spanning several roles he also found time to contribute to the Texas Association of Counties, oversee the energy, environment, and land use committee and board member for the National Association of Counties, and he continues to engage civically as a member of the Rotary Club of Houston, as president of K9s 4 Cops, and as a member of the International Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Educational credentials back his extensive field experience as Eckels boasts a Bachelor of Science in Technology from the University of Houston and a Juris Doctor degree from the South Texas College of Law—an academic foundation that complements his decades-long engagement in governance and legal affairs as he steps into his new position overseeing Texas's regulations on the alcoholic beverage sector.
