Coming up this Wednesday, Roosevelt Elementary School students will lace up their sneakers for National Walk to School Day, an initiative that encourages kids to enjoy the health and community benefits of walking to school. In a collaboration celebrating significant milestones, the event will not only mark the 10th anniversary of the Sidewalk Stompers walking program at the school but also coincide with Roosevelt's 100th birthday. "National Walk to School Day recognizes the importance of giving children safe and healthy routes to school," Emily Hinsdale, President of Sidewalk Stompers, told Tampa.gov.
The commendable increase in student pedestrians has led to impactful infrastructure changes around Roosevelt, including new crosswalks, stop signs, and crossing guards, contributing to a safer and more engaged student community. Despite its historical milestone, Roosevelt is not an solitary participant; a total of 35 Hillsborough County district schools are registered for the walking event this year. Sidewalk Stompers, having started as a local parent initiative during the 2015-16 school year, has witnessed its program swell to encompass the larger community's dedication to student welfare.
This year's Walk to School Day also includes participation from Tampa's Mayor Jane Castor and Superintendent Van Ayres, who are set to welcome the walking and biking students. Such a show of support underscores the local government's endorsement of programs that promote active lifestyles among children. Initiatives like Sidewalk Stompers and events like National Walk to School Day not only address the physical wellbeing of the youth but also aim to foster a sense of community and investment in one's locality.
Sidewalk Stompers would like to extend its gratitude to AtkinsRealis, the engineering firm sponsoring this year's walk to school event. Launched in 2018, Sidewalk Stompers has grown into an award-winning advocacy nonprofit with a vision deeply rooted in engaging the new generation through active transportation, as detailed by Tampa.gov. The organization promotes not just the physical health of students but also mental wellness, community connections, and road safety.
