Garbage collection in Round Rock is set to become slightly more costly for residents and businesses if a proposed rate increase is given the final green light by the city council. In a move spurred by inflation, the Round Rock City Council has conducted a first reading and voted in favor of bumping up collection fees. According to details provided by the City of Round Rock’s official news release, Republic Services, which helms the city's waste management, is looking to adjust the rates by 5% - the maximum allowable increase under its contract with the city.
Republic’s request comes in the wake of a 6.3% spike in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) specifically for garbage and trash collection as of July 2025. The City's agreement with Republic Services contains a clause that to annually adjust rates, based not loosely but firmly on inflationary trends. For residents of Round Rock, this rate boost translates to a monthly hike from $18.77 to $19.71 in service fees. The City also tags on a $3.10 administrative fee for its operations, including the support of the Recycling Center on Deepwood Drive. After taxes, the total rise in the cost homes will face is from $23.67 to $24.69 per month.
Commercial entities will not be spared from these adjustments. Both commercial and Downtown Solid Waste District haulage rates are looking at a similar 5% elevation. These charges include fees that go towards not only solid waste and recycling programs but also serve to maintain Round Rock's thoroughfares. As per the proposal, should the City Council endorse this rate revision on the second reading scheduled for Oct. 23, residents would see the new rates reflected in bills starting after Nov. 1, with Republic Services enacting the new commercial rates precisely on Nov. 1.
Nevertheless, the city is keen to remind its dwellers of the value they're getting. Round Rock advocates an inclusive residential service. Each household is allowed to conveniently place up to seven additional items for curb collection weekly. These items must be manageable - each weighing under 40 pounds and not exceeding 4 feet in size. The array of disposable items spans from household waste to small furniture. Moreover, a shift has occurred from what was once a singular citywide spring cleanup event to a dynamic, on-demand bulk pickup service, allowing for one free bulk pickup per household annually. Also, there's been a boost in the Household Hazardous Waste program that now operates five days a week, according to a city press release.
Round Rock asserts its commitment to facilitating the safe disposal of hazardous waste for its citizens, extending the hours of collection and adding convenience to the disposal of materials like paint and batteries. The program now welcomes these items Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m., without cost to the community. As the cost of living continues to climb, city councils and waste management services are grappling to ensure they can sustainably balance the ledgers while providing essential civic services.
