In a case that highlights the lengths some are willing to go to for a taste of luxury, a San Antonio man has been sentenced to four years in prison after a daring theft of two high-end Corvettes. Jose Israel Barrera Jr., 36, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and unlawful carrying of a weapon in a plea deal with prosecutors, as reported by KSAT.

The curious case began in September 2024 when the Boerne Police Department investigated suspicious activity at Mark Motors. It was a surveillance company that first tipped off the police, reporting an individual pushing a vehicle across a field— an unusual sight indeed. Barrera later concocted a story to authorities about transporting a Corvette he acquired in Midland, but the mismatched license plate and obscured VIN on the trailer told a different story. According to details shared by KENS 5, Barrera's truck held not only the pricey stolen vehicles but also the tools of his illicit trade: a paintball gun, bolt cutters, and black rubber gloves.

Upon inspection, police found a gray 2009 Chevrolet Corvette, valued at $89,000, inside the trailer. The discovery was in line with an earlier police alert about a Corvette being pushed through a field, and the shattered driver’s side window confirmed their suspicions. Barrera's efforts to elude arrest were short-lived, as his attempt at a fleeting escape on foot came to an abrupt halt with his capture by authorities.

As part of a follow-up investigation, Barrera came clean about his methods, including the utilization of pink paintballs to disable security cameras and an ATV to aid in his transport of the high-powered machines. His admission confirmed his involvement in the theft of another Corvette, this one a 2011 ZR1 model valued at $91,900, lifted from the Jaguar of Boerne. "He said he would use pink paintballs to 'disable' security cameras and an ATV to push the car into the trailer," detailed the KSAT release.

Alongside his prison sentence, the court has mandated Barrera to pay restitution totaling $32,577.04 to the aggrieved dealerships for the damages and losses incurred.
