San Antonio's District 9 is blending Halloween festivities with community service, inviting locals to partake in a blood donation event aptly named "We Want Your Blood." Councilwoman Misty Spears is spearheading this initiative, following the success of a previous blood drive where participation filled every appointment slot. The Halloween Blood Drive is scheduled for October 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Frost Bank parking lot, with interested parties encouraged to book appointments ahead of the event; however, walk-ins are also welcomed if space allows.
According to the City of San Antonio, event announcement, the previous #KerrUnited Blood Drive was quite the beacon of community engagement, seeing residents from all around come together and lay bare their arms to support the cause and this time around with costumes in tow the district hopes to match, if not exceed, the prior success wherein 26 units of blood were collected—a contribution believed to have aided 78 lives. Councilwoman Spears commended the past generosity shown by San Antonians, expressing through the official statement, "Our community continues to show up in meaningful ways." The drive is executed in partnership with University Health, embracing the dramatic with donors able to attend in costume as they give their blood.
This event is more than a simple nod to the Halloween spirit; it addresses the critical demand for blood donations during autumn and the upcoming holiday season. According to the City of San Antonio, in a statement obtained by the event organizers, Spears highlighted the typical decline in blood donations during this period despite consistent need, remarking, "Blood donations often dip during the fall and holiday months, but the need remains constant." The councilwoman also noted the simplicity of the action contrasted with its profound impact, underscoring the potential to save lives and support local families across San Antonio through these efforts.
As a token of appreciation, all blood donors will be given a special Halloween treat to take home as a way of saying thanks for their contribution—a small but meaningful gesture recognizing their part in this life-saving endeavor; this might be considered a double treat for many, who get to partake in the Halloween fun and simultaneously provide a vital service to the community. With creative costumes and community spirit expected to color the day's events, the District 9 team eagerly awaits what they hope will be another blood drive marked by robust attendance and benevolence.
