Mark your calendars for a trip through Indian culture right here in San Antonio, as the 17th Annual Diwali San Antonio Festival of Lights is set to brightly take over Hemisfair and Arneson River Theatre. The festival, which is free and open to the public, is slated for Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 4:30 p.m. to midnight. Visitors can expect to engage with traditional Indian dance, entertainment, food, and crafts during this vibrant celebration, as detailed in a news release from the City of San Antonio's website.
Diwali, often described as the festival of lights, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness with candles and lamps traditionally lit to brighten the night. In partnership with AnujaSA and the City of San Antonio, Diwali SA not just honors but also actively showcases the diversity of Indian culture. This cultural tradition is rooted in San Antonio's Sister-City Agreement with Chennai, India, signed back in 2008, aiming to strenghten cross-cultural connections.
According to Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones, "San Antonio’s rich multiculturalism is celebrated with events like Diwali SA." She went on to describe the event, in a statement obtained by the City of San Antonio's news release, as "bringing residents and tourists together to have an authentic cultural experience, bringing India to the heart of Downtown San Antonio at Hemisfair, in celebration of the San Antonio-Chennai Sister-City relationship."
AnujaSA, a key agency propelling this event, dedicates itself to fostering ties between San Antonio and Chennai, with pursuits spanning across various sectors such as Arts and Culture, Medicine, Education, Business and Commerce, and Sports and Recreation. "Diwali SA is a celebration of the vibrant Indian culture, a testament to our shared heritage, and an invitation for all to experience the beauty of unity in diversity," Kausi Subramaniam, Anuja SA President, told the City of San Antonio's news release. Additionally, Subramaniam teased new elements for this year’s festival, including an "interactive AI booth presented by UTSA, highlighting how innovation and technology to intersect with the timeless traditions of India and Diwali."
Since the inception of the Sister-City relationship, San Antonio and Chennai have cultivated a strong bond — an assertion supported by the activities of AnujaSA and the city's Economic Development Department (EDD). Sherry Dowlatshahi, Chief Diplomacy & Protocol Officer at the City of San Antonio Economic Development Department, underscored this partnership by stating on the City of San Antonio’s page, "The annual Diwali SA is a City-sponsored and City-sanctioned event which has brought many community partners together through sponsorships, volunteers, and the wonderful creativity of our Indian residents and neighbors who strive hard to share their wonderful culture with the rest of the residents of our city, bringing a flavor of India to San Antonio."
