San Antonio is gearing up to immerse itself in the rich cultural tapestry of Día de los Muertos, with a weekend packed with events that celebrate the tradition of honoring the departed. The historic Market Square is set to host a vibrant two-day event from October 25 to 26, giving locals and visitors alike the chance to deeply engage with the Mexican tradition that honors friends and family members who have died.
According to the city's official website, festivities kick off with a lively cultural celebration at the Market Square, featuring traditional altars, dance processions, and live music. Patrons can also to truly get their faces painted while they're enjoying the proceedings. One of the highlights promised are Las Monas Cultural Dance Procession, bringing ancestral stories into motion, and it's happening both days from 1 to 2 p.m.
For those intrigued by the customs of Día de los Muertos, the self-guided Altar Tour available every day until November 3 offers an intimate look at ofrendas – altars that celebrate the lives of the departed with gratitude and color. These altars showcase the dynamic and poignant aspects of the tradition, each uniquely themed to remember those who have passed away.
The festivities are not just confined to the Market Square. La Villita is throwing its own three-day extravaganza from October 24-26, as stated on their event website. The Day of the Dead San Antonio River Parade and Festival is a ticketed event that will see the river come alive with a parade of altar-adorned floats. The festival also boasts the second largest Calavera Catrina - a sight patrons surely will not want to miss, along with a menagerie of 20 alebrije spirit-animals and 10 giant calaveras spread around the village to truly make you feel part of the celebration.
Given the downtown area's expected hustle and bustle with concurrent events like Muertos Fest and the Paul McCartney concert, early arrival is being strongly recommended. To assist visitors, VIA Metropolitan Transit is providing free Park & Ride service to the Robert Thompson Transit Station near the Alamodome on October 25, as per the city's announcement. There are several pickup locations, including Crossroads Park & Ride and Brooks Transit Center, aiming to alleviate some of the parking and traffic stresses.
