Cleveland can expect a mild mix of weather patterns in the coming days, according to the latest dispatch from the National Weather Service. Moving southeast across the Great Lakes today is a low pressure system and an associated cold front, set to deliver some light rain activity and occasional thunder over areas of NE Ohio and NW PA. "Rainfall amounts will be light with generally less than one quarter of an inch of rain expected today over land areas," said the NWS. Temperatures will remain consistent away from Lake Erie, with the mercury expected to reach upper 60s to lower 70s, while areas adjacent to the lake will see a cooler day in the 60s thanks to cloud cover and rain showers.
Looking ahead to Sunday, forecasts indicate that the closed upper low may slightly retrograde westward, providing a possibility for isolated to scattered showers, particularly over eastern Lake Erie and extending into adjacent land areas. "However, with flow across the region being southeasterly to easterly, there may be some downsloping in the hills of OH/PA to mitigate rain potential over land and will just have some low PoPs but the period may just be dry with some clouds," the NWS further elaborated. This suggests a generally dry end to the weekend, with cloud activity owing to the moisture and lift arriving from the east.
The short-term outlook presents a brief respite from precipitation as a surface ridge builds from the northeast, promising a dry spell and seasonable temperatures for Sunday night into Monday. However, this peace is forecasted to be disrupted on Tuesday when a cold front will sweep through the region, boosting temperatures potentially into the mid to upper 70s in areas where drought conditions persist. "The front will cross the area later in the day on Tuesday and allow for some rain potential Tuesday night, but the lack of upper level support will make any rain activity isolated to scattered in nature," experts at NWS stipulated.
Looking further into the week, a cooler, Canadian high pressure system will descend upon the area, heralding a return to more normal temperatures and paving the way for potential frost or freeze conditions on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Despite cooler air, the likelihood of lake effect rain remains low due to an overarching dry air mass. By Friday, a shift is expected as the high pressure system moves east, inviting a warm front and thus, the possibility for temperatures to once again climb into the 70s, especially in the western regions.
Maritime conditions on Lake Erie are projected to be rather tame throughout much of October, with no significant marine advisories in sight. The NWS does advise mariners to be mindful of winds that may intensify late Sunday into Monday with speeds of 15 to 20 knots, potentially resulting in waves near 4 feet. "Generally speaking for October, mainly quiet marine conditions are expected into early-next week with no headlines anticipated," remarked the National Weather Service, providing a sigh of relief for those concerned about turbulent waters. Additionally, the chance for waterspouts will persist into Sunday due to the presence of a weak low pressure area and a relatively cool upper air mass over the lake.
