Chambers County has seen the conviction of Sarah Hartsfield for the murder of her fifth husband, Joseph Hartsfield, after a jury deliberated for one hour yesterday. According to ABC13, the trial which drew national attention due to Sarah's past, ended with the revelation of a history charged with allegations of abuse and threats from former partners.
The case against Sarah centered on her husband's death by complications from insulin toxicity, as reported by Click2Houston, the verdict came after evidence was presented showing cellphone data contradicting her alibi and testimonies of her controversial past, the jury heard testimony from three of her children about alleged abuse and from her former foster mother who discussed Sarah's troubled upbringing. Sentencing deliberations are set to continue today where the jury will decide the prison term for Hartsfield.
Sarah's attorney, Case Darwin, argued during the trial that Joseph had severely mismanaged his diabetes and suggested that there had been no crime in failing to render aid, stating, "Absolutely no proof that Sarah administered insulin," Click2Houston reported. Nonetheless, Prosecutor Mallory Vargas countered by portraying Sarah as manipulative, asserting, "Murderers hide how they do it," urging the jury to see through what she considered a facade.
The implications of the verdict reach beyond this trial, as Sarah was previously investigated in 2018 for the death of her then-fiancé in Minnesota, a case which has been reopened following the Chambers County proceedings, Sarah met Joseph online and they were married for 11 months prior to his untimely death, this series of events has been a focal point in the trial and, with the guilty verdict, she now awaits her sentencing.
