In a display of quick action, Schertz residents intervened after a house on the 400 block of Mitchell Avenue explosively combusted, trapping a woman inside. Steven White, an 84-year-old neighbor, rushed to the scene upon hearing the disturbance, initially mistaking the sound for a plane crash. According to KSAT, White witnessed two individuals already attempting to enter the home to help the trapped woman. "I don’t know how I got down there so quick, but I did," White told KSAT. With the front of the house grievously damaged, White assisted by clearing away debris to facilitate the woman's rescue.
The response from the community was immediate, with neighbors working together to safely extricate the injured woman from the smoldering ruins of her home. Once outside, she was led across the street while they awaited medical services. The victim, reportedly with dire burns and lacerations, was later admitted to a hospital for treatment. More details on the rescue were provided by a Seguin Gazette report, which credited a pair of neighbors for crawling through a window to reach and assist the disoriented woman, actions pivotal to her escape from the inferno engulfing her residence.
While the heroics of those involved garnered attention, White remained modest about his role. "The whole front of the house had blown off," he recalled in a statement obtained by KSAT, emphasizing his focus on moving obstructive wreckage. The injured woman's condition following the ordeal has remained a significant concern for White and the community, with updates on her recovery being eagerly sought after by those who witnessed the tragic incident unfold.
Officials have yet to determine the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire. Schertz Fire Department Assistant Chief John Perry indicated that the woman was the sole occupant of the residence during the incident. She was quickly transferred to a San Antonio hospital, though her injuries were not specified in detail, as mentioned in a statement to the Seguin Gazette. Meanwhile, the community's swift response to save one of their own continues to serve as a stark reminder of the power of collective action in times of crisis. The residents of Mitchell Avenue were ready to swiftly move — and to move together — in the face of danger.
