Seattle Police Department's Gun Violence Reduction Unit is currently investigating an accidental shooting that occurred last night near Lakeridge Park, according to a report from the SPD Blotter. The incident unfolded in the woods close to the 10300 block of Waters Avenue South. Patrol officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire around 9:13 p.m., but they found no immediate evidence to indicate a shooting had taken place.
It was later revealed that a man with a gunshot wound to the leg sought treatment at Harborview Medical Center, having been transported there by private vehicle. His condition was described as serious but stable. Detectives from the Gun Violence Reduction Unit responded to the medical center to interview the victim. The injured man admitted to meeting with at least one other person to test-fire their guns in the woods, an activity that ended with him accidentally discharging a firearm and injuring himself.
The SPD has impounded the vehicle of the driver who transported the victim, even though this individual was not present at the time of the shooting. The vehicle is now at the Vehicle Processing Room, and it is undergoing a thorough search for additional evidence. The investigation remains active and is under the purview of the Gun Violence Reduction Unit detectives.
