A Sterling Heights man, Jacob Michael Nelson, faces multiple charges in a human trafficking case. Nelson, 39, is accused of forcing a woman into sex for money, administering drugs to increase compliance and service capacity, and employing violence as punishment for any refusal of sex work, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office disclosed in reports covered by FOX 2 Detroit.

Nelson's charges include conducting a human trafficking enterprise, accepting earnings from prostitution, and transporting a person for prostitution. As reported by CBS Detroit, convictions can lead to sentences up to 15 years for the enterprise charge, and as much as 20 years for each, of the accepting earnings and transportation charges. This case marks the 34th human trafficking charge by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, since it organized trafficking training with local law enforcement in November 2024, and the 73rd since the creation of a specialized unit in 2021.

Prosecutor Karen McDonald emphasized the county's commitment to combating human trafficking. "Human trafficking festered for too long in our communities," McDonald stated, as recounted by ClickOnDetroit. She added, "From my first day in office, we’ve made battling trafficking a priority. The results are clear: traffickers are being held accountable in Oakland County, and victims are getting help to escape cycles of abuse and manipulation."

The victim in Nelson's case was allegedly compelled to consume Adderall and methamphetamine, which were forces that enabled her to meet the increased demands placed upon her weakened agency, according to the allegations brought forward by officials and relayed by FOX 2 Detroit. This case adds to a series of human trafficking incidents that have come under closer focus by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office in recent years. Before the establishment of the trafficking unit, five cases had been charged over a nine-year span.
