A nearly 12-hour standoff in Livonia, Michigan, ended late on Wednesday when a 35-year-old man was taken into custody following a police response at Arbor Woods Condominiums. The incident began around 10 a.m. during a welfare check and concluded at approximately 9:30 p.m. ClickOnDetroit reported that the man fired shots during the standoff.
SWAT teams used tactics including smoke grenades to coax the man out of the house, as per CBS News Detroit. Local resident Isabella Kemp said, “It’s right next to my house, so I can’t ignore it. This whole thing is crazy.” Another witness, Scott Glutting, added, “I’ve stood here for the last six or eight hours. I’ve been here since 2:30 (p.m.) watching the whole thing.” Police recovered weapons from the scene and confirmed there is no further threat to the community.
According to the Livonia Police Department on their Facebook page, a standoff in the area of Ann Arbor Trail and Parent ended peacefully. “The Livonia Police Department is pleased to report that the situation in the area of Ann Arbor Trail and Parent has been peacefully resolved,” the post stated. “The suspect is now in custody, weapons have been recovered and there is no further threat to the public.” Police said the man involved, who lives with his grandparents and has a history of mental illness, was taken into custody without incident. The grandparents were not home at the time, and Ann Arbor Trail, which was temporarily closed, has since reopened.
