Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is raising the alarm over Lorex Technology Inc., a security camera company with potential ties to the Chinese Communist Party. In a move to protect the privacy and security of Texans, Paxton has launched an investigation into whether Lorex is deceptively selling products that could compromise national and personal security. "Texans should never have to worry that the devices protecting their homes could be tied to foreign adversaries," Paxton stated, as reported by the Texas Attorney General's Office. The concern hinges on Lorex's past association with Dahua, a company identified by the U.S. Department of War as a "Chinese military company."
Though Lorex was acquired by Taiwan-based Skywatch in 2022, the shadow of Dahua still lingers. Sources close to the matter suggest Dahua continues to provide key components for Lorex's cameras. This link is troublesome considering the restrictions both the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Federal Communications Commission have implemented against Dahua's products over national security risks. Despite the allegations, Texans can still find Lorex cameras up for grabs at major retailers like Amazon and Costco.
Paxton's investigation will focus on the veracity of Lorex's product descriptions. The primary concern is whether Lorex is misleading consumers by marketing their cameras as secure and safe for residential use, despite the possible risks connected to their hardware elements. Paxton's office is intent on making sure that any company giving the CCP any level of access to American soil will face the full force of Texas law.
