Three men were handed life sentences without the possibility of parole for their roles in the 2023 quadruple shooting at a North Philadelphia recreation center, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. According to FOX 29, those convicted were Tyyon Bates, Quaza Lopez, and Eric Reid, with the investigation leading to their capture still marked as active by officials, who anticipate further arrests.
The incident taking place near a playground at 8th and Diamond Streets shook the community as gunfire erupted on the basketball courts of the rec center on August 11, 2023, just after 6 p.m. In the midst of the chaos, Nyreese Moore, Naasir Folk, and Isaiah Williams sustained fatal injuries, while a fourth victim, Jeffrey Pressley, suffered wounds that he later recovered from, as reported by NBC Philadelphia. Moore, 22, and Folk, 24, were pronounced dead at the scene, whereas Williams, also 22, succumbed to his injuries the following day at a local hospital.
Investigators gathered 107 pieces of ballistic evidence from the scene. This evidence, alongside surveillance video from the recreation center, played a crucial role in piecing together the events leading to these convictions. Bates was apprehended after an 18-month manhunt by U.S. Marshals on March 31, 2025, as stated by FOX 29.
The three convicted, all in their early twenties at the time of the incident, were sentenced to three consecutive life sentences alongside additional time – 24 to 48 years to be served in state correctional institutions. "All three defendants were sentenced to life in prison without parole," 6abc reported.
