Michigan is celebrating the academic feats of two of its own, Alexandra Kate Paisley and Ryan R. Wang, who have been named 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholars, the state's Interim Superintendent Dr. Sue C. Carnell announced the distinction, highlighting it as a reflection of the talent and promise that exists within the state's youth, as reported by Michigan's Department of Education.
Paisley, from Royal Oak Shrine Catholic High School, and Wang, from Troy High School, stood out among the Michigan semifinalists, originally numbering 14. Their recognition among 161 seniors nationwide is no small accomplishment, representing a sliver of the 3.9 million students graduating this year, and it's a testament to their dedication and leadership, which has their communities and educators buzzing with pride. Dr. Carnell praised them in a statement saying, "Alexandra and Ryan exemplify some of our best Michigan learners," touting their achievements as inspirational, as noted by the Department of Education.
The coveted awards are doled out by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, taking into account academic prowess, artistic achievement, proficiency in career and technical education fields, student-composed essays, school recommendations and transcripts, and engagement in community service and leadership. The carrot at the end of the stick for these scholars is recognition via an online ceremony, as stated by U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon.
From a pool swollen with more than 6,400 qualified candidates based on standardized test scores or nominations, these winners emerged, and these scholars proliferate from each state, including D.C., Puerto Rico, and expatriates, with an additional 55 being recognized at-large for the arts and career and technical domains. Anyone interested in knowing the full roster of these young trailblazers can find them listed at the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program website.
