A University of Central Florida professor has found himself on the wrong side of the law after being arrested for an alleged altercation involving a chase and assault of a student on an e-bike. Dr. Shuo Sean Pang, 41, an associate professor at UCF's College of Optics and Photonics, faces charges of battery and trespassing.
The incident reportedly began near the Oviedo Aquatic Center last Tuesday, when Pang allegedly followed a student to Jackson Heights Middle School after the student did not comply with his request to slow down. According to WFTV, the student claimed that Pang grabbed his arm, and upon being asked to let go, Pang struck the student and knocked off his helmet. A friend of the student and a parent who witnessed the confrontation intervened to break up the altercation.
Once alerted to the situation, school staff quickly stepped in to de-escalate the escalating matter. Video surveillance present at the scene appears to support the claims made by the children involved. As per WESH, Pang acknowledged having chased the student to request him to stop riding his bike and admitted to entering the school property, later inquiring if he could apologize to the minor.
Following the incident, UCF has placed Dr. Pang on paid administrative leave pending a review of the altercation. All parents of the involved minors are reported to be pressing charges against Pang for what was detailed in court documents as first-degree battery and second-degree trespassing. The professor's arraignment is expected to take place on November 18, with both his professional and legal futures hanging precariously in the balance.
