Uvalde's community stepped into a new beginning this week as Legacy Elementary School opened its doors for the first time to students and teachers, commemorating a step ahead while honoring the memories of those lost in a dark chapter of the city's history. According to a KSAT report, the new $60 million campus replaces Robb Elementary School, where a tragic shooting claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers nearly three and a half years ago.
Construction for the new school, which began in spring 2023, culminated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony just a week prior to welcoming its first attendees. Laura Perez, the school board president, emphasized the importance of the move, not just in geography but in spirit, telling KSAT multiple teachers from the former Robb Elementary School now teach at Legacy. As students returned, there’s a shared hope for safety and a fresh start, with one parent expressing, “I told her, ‘Have fun.’ We just hope the school is safe for the kids.”
Commemoration and forward motion meld together at Legacy Elementary, where a unique tree-shaped memorial with 19 branches, and two larger ones, honor the lives of those taken at Robb, a KENS 5 article noted. This centerpiece is a daily reminder amidst state-of-the-art security measures which include doors with sensors, keypads for restricted access, and bullet-proof glass, representing a promise etched into the very architecture: safety is paramount.
The student body, totaling around 600, and their teachers embark on an emotional and significant journey as education resumes in this newly hallowed ground. Evadulia Orta, who lost her son Rojelio in the shooting, shared with KENS 5 a heartbreaking resolve as her daughter steps into the place her son can never attend. "I’m getting up every day because he wouldn’t want me to be in bed... I have him in my head, 'Come on, Mom, you need to them ready for school,'" she said. And as these words echo through the community, Legacy Elementary stands as a beacon of perseverance, and a tribute to the dreams that were left behind, but not forgotten.
