The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin is issuing fines for school bus violations. Two drivers were each fined $775.50 for not stopping for a school bus with flashing red lights—one in the Town of Kewaskum and another in the Village of Richfield, as reported by the Wisconsin Sheriff's Office.
Under Wisconsin law, drivers must stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus with flashing red lights. The law applies to drivers approaching the bus or following it, regardless of whether the road is divided. Sheriff Schulteis said, “Strict enforcement of this law is necessary to ensure the safety of children. There is zero tolerance for drivers who ignore a stopped school bus,” as stated by the Wisconsin Sheriff's Office.
Washington County is enforcing school bus safety laws, with fines of nearly $800 for drivers or vehicle owners who do not stop for buses, according to the Wisconsin Sheriff’s Office on their Facebook page. The county said, “Our goal is simple — to achieve compliance with the law and protect children, not to issue costly citations.” Drivers are reminded to slow down, stay alert, and always stop for school buses.
