In a heartbreaking case of child abuse in West Allis, prosecutors have charged two parents following the death of their 4-year-old son, Dante Campbell. According to FOX6 News, paramedics responding to a 911 call found the boy unresponsive with bruising so severe that West Allis police described it as "the most extensive and severe injuries that I have witnessed on a child."
The boy's parents, Charlotte Kurek, 31, and Devario Cruz, 21, are facing multiple charges including chronic neglect of a child resulting in death. It is reported by JSONLINE that Cruz could face life in prison plus 147 years, while Kurek could see up to 66 years behind bars if convicted on their respective charges. Initial details of the case suggest that the parents attempted to cover up the abuse, with Cruz going as far as to admit to striking the child but claiming to have "only used my hands."
Upon further investigation, the narrative quickly unraveled to reveal a disturbing history of abuse. Interviews with the children in the home and information obtained by WISN 12 News indicated that Cruz regularly inflicted physical punishment on the twins, and Kurek did nothing to intervene. This abuse included standing on Legos as punishment and being struck with various objects. One child witness heartbreakingly told investigators, "[He] never got a break from being beat."
Despite signs of ongoing abuse that were sufficient enough to prompt an anonymous report to Child Protective Services, as detailed by WISN 12 News, the system failed to prevent the tragic outcome. Searches of the parents' apartment also uncovered more than a pound of marijuana and firearms. Kurek and Cruz are scheduled for initial court appearances, and under the law, they are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
