As we prepare for National Move Over Day on Saturday, the Wisconsin DNR reminds everyone that the Move Over Law, effective since 2001, requires drivers to shift lanes or slow down when approaching stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights. This law applies not only to roads but also to trails and waterways, ensuring the safety of emergency responders and workers across all environments, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Whether on multi-lane roads, trails with ATVs, or waterways patrolled by wardens, the law mandates slowing down or moving over to protect those responding to emergencies. Following these rules is essential not just for legal compliance, but to keep everyone safe in Wisconsin’s diverse outdoor spaces, as reported by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Recreationists using Wisconsin’s 2,300 miles of ATV trails and 62,500 miles of routes must reduce speed to 10 mph or less when within 100 feet of personnel not on motorized vehicles, as stated in Wis. Stat. s. 23.33(3)(gm). On water, riders should maintain a slow-no-wake speed within 100 feet of officers. Jacob Holsclaw, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources off-highway vehicle administrator, said, “Let’s work together so everyone – those using the roads and routes and those helping or working on behalf of the public – make it home safely every day.” Compliance with the Move Over Law helps ensure safety for both the public and emergency workers.
