For the first time in Wisconsin, a newborn was safely surrendered at a Racine fire station through a Safe Haven Baby Box. According to FOX 6 Now, this device allows parents to anonymously and securely surrender infants in safe conditions.

As reported by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the healthy baby girl was placed in the box at Racine Fire Station 4 on Thursday last week. Firefighters and EMS personnel immediately provided care after being alerted by the device’s silent alarm. The infant was then taken to Ascension All Saints Hospital for evaluation before being placed in the custody of Racine County Child Protective Services, which began the adoption process.

According to WISN, Racine’s Safe Haven Baby Box is one of seven in Wisconsin and part of a network of 390 boxes across 23 states. The Racine Fire Department expressed appreciation to community partners for supporting the installation and operation of the baby box.
