Wisconsin is under heightened alert following an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, which has led to the suspension of all poultry-related events in four southeastern counties. According to Spectrum News 1, Jefferson, Waukesha, Walworth, and Rock counties have halted poultry shows, exhibitions, swap meets, and bird movement until December 31, to prevent further spread.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has advised poultry owners in the affected areas to keep their birds indoors and avoid contact with wild birds, which can carry the virus. Spectrum News 1 reported that Jefferson County has been particularly affected, with one large farm of over three million birds experiencing a significant outbreak.
WTMJ stated that bird flu symptoms can include sudden death, difficulty breathing, coughing, sneezing, loss of energy or appetite, reduced egg production, discoloration of wattles, comb, or legs, lack of coordination, and diarrhea. Poultry owners noticing these signs or unusual bird deaths should report them through DATCP’s Reporting Animal Disease webpage.
According to FOX 6 Now, the virus can affect both domestic poultry and wild birds such as the whooping crane. It spreads through direct contact with infected birds or contaminated materials like droppings, equipment, and clothing. Authorities continue to urge strict biosecurity measures to limit transmission.
