As hunting season begins in Wisconsin, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is encouraging hunters to participate in the Deer Donation Program, which provides venison to residents facing food insecurity. Since its start in 2000, the program has collected donations of more than 100,000 deer, resulting in over 4 million pounds of venison distributed to food pantries across the state, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Recent data shows that more than 700,000 Wisconsin residents—nearly 12% of the population—are receiving food assistance. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources notes that the Deer Donation Program helps address increased demand for food support during this time.

To donate, hunters should properly field dress and register their deer through GameReg, keeping the registration confirmation for drop-off. Deer must be handled safely, kept cool, and tested for chronic wasting disease (CWD) if required in the county of harvest. A list of counties requiring testing is available on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ website. Hunters should also call ahead to ensure that a participating meat processor has space to accept donations.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recommends using lead-free ammunition or taking steps to minimize lead contamination in donated meat. All venison must meet safety standards before being distributed.

Financial contributions can also be made to support the program through the DNR’s Go Wild website or in person. More information about participating in or supporting the Deer Donation Program is available on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website.
