As the leaves turn their seasonal hues and the air takes on that crisp coolness unique to autumn, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is rolling out the welcome mat for outdoor enthusiasts. According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recent press release, the Wisconsin State Park System is set to host a series of fall-friendly events throughout October and November, complete with candlelight hikes and festive gatherings that promise to be the antithesis of a digital screen's glow.
There's a special cause for celebration this year. With a nod to its storied past, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has pointed out the park system's 125th anniversary – inviting people to literally walk down a memory lane festooned with lanterns and torches. "This year is the 125th anniversary of the Wisconsin State Park System, so it's a great opportunity to remind people that our properties are all-season attractions," Steve Schmelzer, DNR Parks and Recreation Management director, said in a statement obtained by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Embracing a casual vibe, these events often culminate around a bonfire with s'mores in hand – and if you're lucky, the whiff of pumpkin innards from some spirited carving.
Beyond the candlelit trails, additional activities are set to entertain across multiple generations. Think wagon rides, campfires, and, for the sugar inclined, a bevy of s'mores waiting to be assembled and devoured. Don't worry about packing snacks – refreshments will be there for the purchasing or donation-based acquisition, as detailed the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources press release. In the enthusiasm to partake, parking only in designated areas and opting for brightly colored clothing or glow sticks was emphasized by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources staff to ensure safety and visibility during the events. And note, if you're dreaming of an autumnal toast, remember that open intoxicants are not permitted.
Fall events in Wisconsin’s parks are fun, but a little planning goes a long way. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds visitors that some facilities may be limited due to seasonal staffing and weather. Most parks require a state park vehicle pass, but some libraries offer free passes through a loan program (check the list online).
