With October recognized as National Pedestrian Safety Month, Yolo County’s Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) is reminding residents to stay alert on the roads, particularly as Halloween approaches. According to an HHSA announcement, the days around October 31 see increased risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers due to holiday activities, costumes, and reduced daylight.

According to the Yolo County press release, the HHSA Traffic Safety Team advises motorists to slow down, watch for trick-or-treaters, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence. Those planning to drink are encouraged to use a designated driver, public transportation, or rideshare services. Parents and children are urged to choose well-fitting, visible costumes with reflective materials or lights, stay on sidewalks, and cross streets only at marked crosswalks or corners.

Pedestrians are also reminded to make eye contact with drivers before crossing, an important precaution as quieter electric vehicles and scooters become more common. The campaign emphasizes shared responsibility among all road users to prevent accidents.

The initiative is supported by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) through a state and federal grant.
