Two suspected drunk drivers hit Harris County Sheriff’s Office patrol cruisers Saturday night in Humble while deputies were directing traffic for a large public event, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. A sergeant inside one of the patrol vehicles sustained minor injuries, was treated at a clinic and released, as reported by ABC13.
Near FM‑1960 East and Belleau Wood Drive, the crashes unfolded as deputies managed traffic outside the event. ABC13 reported Sheriff Ed Gonzalez shared photos of the damaged cruisers on social media.
FOX 26 Houston said the sergeant was taken to an urgent-care clinic and released, and that while investigators were on the scene, a second driver struck the rear of another unoccupied patrol cruiser. It wasn’t immediately clear whether either crash was tied to the event deputies were assisting with, the station noted.
Sheriff Gonzalez told reporters both drivers showed signs of intoxication and were arrested on suspicion of DWI, per ABC13. Authorities have not released the suspects’ names or booking details as the investigation continues.
Traffic-control duty can be hazardous
Stopped or parked patrol vehicles are frequent targets in roadway crashes, a risk for both law enforcement and tow crews working corridors like FM‑1960. In a similar incident, Click2Houston reported Harris County Sheriff’s Office cruisers were struck while deputies responded to a different scene in 2023.
What’s next
Both drivers were taken into custody on suspicion of DWI and will face booking and possible formal charges as investigators forward the case to prosecutors, according to FOX 26 Houston. The sheriff’s office asked anyone with information or video of the crashes to contact investigators.
Officials have not released additional updates, and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for more information. Nearby residents and drivers are reminded to obey traffic controls and give extra room to emergency personnel working on or beside roadways.
