Dublin's Abbey Theater is staging a new play, "The Witch of November," to mark the 50th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald disaster. The play, penned by Vidas Barzdukas, dives into the voyage that led to the 1975 sinking of the American freighter in Lake Superior and the ensuing loss of all 29 crew members. With mixed elements of drama and history, the premiere is set to showcase on November 7, 8, 14, and 15, at 7 p.m., and on November 9 and 16, at 2 p.m. "We are excited to bring this world premiere play to life on the Abbey Theater stage," the Abbey Theater of Dublin Supervisor Joe Bishara expressed in a statement obtained from the City of Dublin's official announcement.
The narrative closely follows the ship's captain, Ernest McSorley, portrayed by Tom Holliday, as he navigates through not only the stormy waters but also the stormy passages of his life. Audiences can expect to get a glimpse into McSorley's personal life, including his marriage, as the play seeks to deeply carve out the human element of this maritime tragedy. Tickets are retailing at $25 per person and can be picked up through the Abbey Theater's website.
A notable ensemble has been gathered to realistically render the play, with actors such as Rusty Wummel and Sean Taylor supporting Holliday's portrayal of the captain. Josie Merkle steps into the shoes of McSorley's wife, Nellie, offering an intimate look at the captain's life beyond his maritime duties. The creative minds behind this premiere do not end on the stage; director Joe Bishara brings his extensive experience from over 300 theatrical productions to helm the play.
Playwright Vidas Barzdukas, who has a reputable background in the arts, ranging from stage to screen, has brought to life this tribute to the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald. His dedication to both theatre and education is evident in his rich portfolio of playwriting, directing, and educational publishing. Abbey Theater aims to not only honor the crew's memory but also to vividly remind audiences of the perils often faced, but rarely seen, by seafarers. As Bishara told the Abbey Theater official release, according to the City of Dublin's official announcement, "We are proud to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and honor the memory of those involved."
