Residents of the Short North area of Columbus experienced a jarring episode on Tuesday evening, when a gunshot echoed through the 1100 block of N High St. The Columbus Division of Police swiftly responded to the incident after receiving a shooting report around 6:13 p.m. yesterday. According to a social media post by the Columbus Division of Police, officers arrived to find one individual afflicted by a gunshot wound, who was then expedited to the hospital with expectations of recovery.
The incident turned a new leaf when, during the process of securing the scene, the alleged shooter made a surprising appearance. The suspect, identified by authorities as 23-year-old Dejai Preston Jr., approached the officers and identified himself as the perpetrator. Preston Jr. was promptly taken into custody and now faces charges of Felonious Assault. The Columbus Division of Police laid out the narrative of Preston Jr.'s unexpected surrender in the same Facebook announcement, marking a bizarre twist in an already tense situation.
Felonious Assault, a serious charge in the state of Ohio, indicates that the suspect purportedly knowingly caused or attempted to cause physical harm to another person with a deadly weapon or firearm. It is a felony of the second degree and carries with it substantial legal ramifications, including potential prison sentences and fines. The motivations behind the shooting and the events leading up to it remain under investigation by local authorities.
