An Atascosa County judge on Wednesday sentenced Roger Arteaga Gonzalez to 60 years in prison following his conviction for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The case dates back to December 2023, when deputies reported that Gonzalez left his former partner critically injured and wrapped in plastic in a pasture.
How The Attack Unfolded
In December 2023, deputies responded to the 4000 block of Eichman Road northwest of Poteet, where they found a woman beaten, stabbed, and with her throat slashed, wrapped in plastic in a nearby pasture. A neighbor, described in reports as a veteran, discovered her and called 911. The woman survived and was hospitalized, as reported by Fox News.
Arrest, Verdict And Sentence
Investigators later located Gonzalez at a home in San Antonio and took him into custody. Authorities reported that he was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of the alleged attack. Gonzalez was found guilty and opted to have the judge determine his sentence. The judge sentenced him to 60 years in prison, as per KSAT.
What The Sentence Means Under Texas Law
Under Texas law, aggravated assault convictions carry significant prison terms, depending on factors such as weapon use and the severity of the victim’s injuries. As a first-degree felony, the offense can be punished by five to 99 years or life in prison, which accounts for the court’s decision to impose a multi-decade sentence in this case, according to Texas statutes.
Resources And Aftermath
The 81st Judicial District Attorney’s Office handled the prosecution, and local officials acknowledged the efforts of multiple agencies involved in the investigation, KSAT reported.
