The City of Austin has announced a range of closures in observance of Thanksgiving 2025. In a statement released by the City of Austin, all administrative offices and various municipal facilities will be taking a break for the holiday, shutting down on Thursday, Nov. 27, and Friday, Nov. 28.
Despite the closures, residents won't be left stranded when it comes to essential services. For instance, the City of Austin Utilities will still process payments online and via phone—convenient for those who find their holiday marred by a sudden need to settle a bill. Contributions to the city's coffers will continue uninterrupted, with physical payment locations available at select retail stores across Austin.
And while offices might be silent, the hustle of sanitation will rumble on, as Austin Resource Recovery adjusts its collection timetable. Bins normally emptied on Thursday and Friday will instead see a delay, with trash and recycling pickup pushed to the following days - essentially ensuring that the leftover vestiges of turkey day feasts don't linger too long on curbsides. Those who rely on schedules set by the Austin Recycles app or the city's waste management website shouldn't be caught off guard.
Outdoor enthusiasts and recreational athletes will face some limitations, however. While you can still bask in the majority of Austin's parks, certain facilities like Austin tennis centers and aquatic features, save for the Barton Springs Pool, will not welcome visitors. Those planning a post-feast round of golf or a reflective stroll through Zilker Botanical Gardens on Thursday will need to revise their plans—a minor inconvenience in a holiday otherwise steeped in leisure and family time.
Conclusively, the city implores residents to exercise some of their digital savvy or reach for the historically reliable landline to report any emergencies related to power or water services. Austinites can kiss goodbye to city office interactions for a brief spell, but, like the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, "normal business hours will resume Monday, Dec. 1," confirms the city's communication.
