The city of Austin has given the green light to two incentive awards for local businesses under its Place-Based Enhancement Program. The program is part of the broader Chapter 380 initiative, aiming to provide financial stability and growth for Austin's creative and legacy businesses. According to the City of Austin, the approval was granted to a children's dance company, Balance Dance Studios, and a long-standing coffee shop and improv theater, The Hideout.
Balance Dance Studios, with its eye on expansion, is set to receive up to $540,000 over ten years, contingent on its tax impact on the city. The funds will support the studio's substantial $10.5 million investment into its South Austin operations. These new plans include a sizable 33,000 square-foot addition featuring a new performance theater, green rooms, and spaces desired for a variety of uses, such as youth programs and community events. Whereas, The Hideout is poised to receive up to $160,000 to assist with its relocation efforts and continuous operation. This incentive will be dedicated to its $700,000 investment towards tenant improvements and new equipment.
The Hideout is not merely a coffee shop, but an institution with a 25-year legacy that includes an improv theater. It's known for fostering a community spirit and having a loyal customer base. In contrast to this, Balance Dance Studios represents the investment in Austin's future, nurturing the arts in younger generations and building spaces that further the city's role as a cultural hub.
"Austin is home to incredible talent, creativity, and entrepreneurship," interim director of Austin Economic Development, Anthony Segura, remarked. According to the City of Austin, "These are cherished local businesses with strong roots in Austin, and we are proud to encourage community-oriented policies that combine economic growth and tourism with prosperity for our legacy businesses and creative spaces." Segura's statement reinforces the city's commitment to maintain the vibrancy and individuality that these businesses bring to Austin's community fabric.
