Residents of Austin are being invited to join the "Community in the Loop" series, an initiative by the City of Austin to democratize the discussion and policymaking process around Artificial Intelligence (AI) utilization in governance. The event set for Nov. 19 is organized in collaboration with Measure and the Austin AI Alliance, offering the public an opportunity to engage with AI experts, city officials, and community-led organizations in crafting an AI Accountability Framework aimed at ensuring fairness, transparency, and building trust. According to the City of Austin press release, the framework focuses on the responsible use of AI systems by the City.
Assistant Director of Budget and Organizational Excellence for the City of Austin, Daniel Culotta, expressed the importance of proactivity when he stated, "Artificial intelligence is reshaping how cities serve their communities, and Austin is taking a proactive approach." The event promises an overview of the City’s dealings with AI, an "AI 101" educational session, and, importantly, a community listening session to voice residents' experiences and opinions. Meme Styles, founder and president of Measure, highlighted the value of community involvement, saying, "Our role in this work is to ensure that community voices and lived experiences guide how the City approaches AI." Echoing this sentiment, Sean Bauld, Executive Director of the Austin AI Alliance, conveyed pride in the cross-sector collaboration bounding ahead to bring inclusive AI practices to benefit Austin’s community.
The initiative follows the unanimous passing of Resolution 55 by the Austin City Council earlier this year, which puts ethical constraints on government AI use. "Community in the Loop" represents just one part of a three-session series designed to keep citizens informed and involved as Austin advances with its emerging technology strategy.
