Baltimore's Sandtown-Winchester community is grappling with the impending closure of New Song Academy, a community pillar since 1994. With a move scheduled in mid-academic year from New Song Academy to Harlem Park, concerns are mounting over student safety and transportation, as well as the logistics of uprooting the school community to a shared facility.

Residents voiced concern at a meeting with Baltimore City Public Schools after learning that New Song Academy’s charter operator is facing financial and building problems, including an old roof and HVAC system. With winter coming, families worry about students having to walk farther to Harlem Park, fearing cold, tiring trips and lingering neighborhood tensions that affect their safety. "Wintertime is coming. Many of our students walk to this school, and to walk down to Harlem Park is too long of a walk, especially with it getting darker sooner," Lamar Richards, an alumnus of the Academy, stated, as per WMAR-2 News.

Financial obligations and undisclosed problems of the school's operator took center stage in the debacle, with the district claiming the operator misled them about their financial health, which led to this "emergency situation," Angela Alvarez, senior executive director of the Office of New Initiatives, explained to the community, as reported by CBS News.

The school district, while acknowledging the difficulties of the situation, implies that the measures taken were necessary and urgent. Chief of staff Alison Perkins-Cohen confirmed that they had staff assess the safety of the new commute.
