The National Weather Service in Wilmington forecasts breezy southwest winds that are cranking up the heat today. With wind gusts potentially reaching the 25 to 35 mph range later in the morning and into the afternoon, the NWS advises that we're in for a windy day. Those gusts are the preamble to developing showers this evening, thanks to a cold front on a collision course with the region, so the National Weather Service suggests packing an umbrella along with that windbreaker.
While most of us might enjoy today's unseasonably warm temperatures, which could reach the balmy zone in the upper 60s to lower 70s, don't expect the warmth to last. As the front barrels through, showers will spread their reach, especially across the southeast. We might even hear the odd rumble of thunder, and though the shot at severe storms is slim, they aren't off the table, but we shouldn't worry too much about battening down the hatches just yet. Once the front passes, Sunday ushers in a return to reality, with highs returning to the more seasonable range of upper 40s north to low/mid 50s in the south.
Looking ahead to next week, don't get too comfortable with the calm. Sunday night's literal cool-down drops us into the 20s, and while Monday might be dry, a pesky shortwave disturbance is said to swipe at its coattails into Tuesday, casting clouds and light rain across our skies. However, it's shaping up to be a complicated week weather-wise, with shifting models and varying forecasts. Nevertheless, at least we’re looking at a potential warm-up, even if it means welcoming more weather patterns back into the mix.
