As Black Friday ushers in the annual spike in holiday shopping, the Bellevue Police Department has kicked off its "Stop the Lift" campaign, aimed squarely at reducing shoplifting incidents in local businesses. Bellevue Police Chief Wendell Shirley emphasized the commitment of the department to collaborate with retailers, declaring, “Shoplifting is the most common crime in Bellevue, but this police department is committed to collaborate with local businesses in making sure individuals who attempt to shoplift are held accountable,” in a recent social media post from the Bellevue Police Department's Facebook page.
During the festive season, up until Christmas, Bellevue officers are to partner with area retail stores with an eye on deterring potential shoplifters. The multi-pronged strategy includes high visibility patrols, enforcing criminal charges when necessary, and leveraging social media for crime prevention outreach. These efforts intend to actively reduce the opportunities for shoplifting during a time when stores are typically bustling with consumers.
Reflecting on the campaign’s history, "Last year’s “Stop the Lift” holiday campaign was a success for both Bellevue Police and the community," reported the police department. Officers made 161 shoplifting arrests and looked into 244 shoplifting incidents in the time from Black Friday to Christmas, as highlighted by the department's Crime Analysis Unit.
The Bellevue Police Department's approach seeks to directly engage the issue of retail theft by increasing officers' presence during a time notorious for a rise in shoplifting.
