In an innovative melding of technology and community engagement, University Heights High School students in the Bronx have taken their love of engineering and robotics to create an attraction that locks the mind in a puzzle while, quite literally, locking participants in a room. These students, adept with their knowledge of robotics, have transformed an ordinary concept into an extraordinary experience: a bodega-themed escape room that is engineered to mirror the lively corner stores sprinkled throughout the Bronx.

The resourceful group, using their accumulated academic experiences, decided to craft every detail of the escape room to be a reflection of their community's culture. Complete with a robot designed to resemble the quintessential bodega cat, the escape room is now standing as the latest buzz-generating locale within the Bronx. Of special interest, ABC7NY that it's not only a showcase of students' ingenuity but is also quickly becoming a community highlight.

Not one to step back from innovative collaborations, the University Heights High School robotics team has partnered with Andrew Freedman Home, a notable community space along the Grand Concourse, for this creative venture. The marriage of their technical prowess and the venue’s commitment to community enrichment has led to a cultural hotspot that is immersive, educational, and entertaining.

This exhibition of technical skill and local pride was underlined during a stint where Nathan Weber, the robotics teacher, alongside students Amber Li and Illyanie Valera, shared insights on WNYC regarding the project's inception and their robotics backgrounds, which played a pivotal role in creating the escape room. Our "robotics background helped prepare us for escape room success," Weber described, with an interview captured by WNYC. While locked in a bodega, the producer from WNYC, Verónica Del Valle, called into the session to convey the vibes and the challenge of the room firsthand.

As reported by WNYC, the bodega escape room is anticipated to open later this week, ready to challenge both the wits and the problem-solving skills of anyone willing to take on the intricacies hidden in plain sight—much like the products on the shelves of a real Bronx bodega.
