A 48-year-old Brooklyn man was fatally stabbed in a Brownsville public housing complex that hosts a community center, according to police. The victim, identified as Kevin Coleman, sustained multiple stab wounds within the premises of NYCHA’s Langston Hughes Apartments, the NYPD said. Gothamist reports that the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. yesterday.
Police officers who arrived at the scene found Coleman in a critical state. Despite the efforts of first responders, who rushed him to Brookdale Hospital, Coleman's injuries proved fatal and he was later pronounced dead. As of now, details surrounding the motive for the attack remain unclear, and law enforcement has yet to provide a description of a assailant—a figure that fled the scene and remains at large, informs Gothamist.
Gothamist further details that Coleman lived in East New York, which is roughly a mile away from the site of the stabbing. Although this incident casts a shadow on the community, NYPD data shows a marked decrease in homicides at public housing sites, a 26% drop, which surpasses the citywide decline of just 21%. This reduction is especially pronounced in Police Service Area 2, which covers the NYCHA properties in Brownsville, experiencing an over 80% decline in homicides compared to last year.
News 12 New York confirms the location of the stabbing at 301 Sutter Ave., noting that emergency medical services transported Coleman to One Brooklyn-Health-Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center after the attack. His time of death, as well as the exact circumstances that led to the stabbing, are still subjects of the ongoing NYPD investigation.
