The streets of Cleveland are witnessing a new addition that's catching the eyes of pedestrians and drivers alike. In a bid to bolster road safety, the City of Cleveland, in partnership with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), has introduced what's known as centerline hardening infrastructure changes aimed directly at preventing accidents between left-turning cars and those traversing the crosswalk on foot.
According to a recent social media announcement by the City of Cleveland, this installation is a strategic move to reduce vehicle-pedestrian conflicts, a concern for urban areas nationwide.
👀 What’s that at the intersection???

It's a straightforward yet ingenious solution; the centerline hardening consists of physical barriers placed along centerlines where left turns across crosswalks are most perilous. These barriers aim to slow down the turning vehicles, ostensibly giving drivers more time to notice and yield to pedestrians.
