In an update that's sure to bring relief to many, Colorado's SNAP beneficiaries can expect their full November food assistance benefits to land on their EBT cards shortly after the federal government's reopening following its longest shutdown to date. As stated by the Colorado Governor's Office, the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) is pushing to distribute funds rapidly to approximately 600,000 state residents, a shift from the initial plan to process only 65% of the benefits that was set previously.
Colorado is pivoting from the partial plan that came into existence following the government's late action and confusion; however, thanks to a legislative package that funded the USDA until 2026, complete SNAP payments for November are covered, as well as certainty for December's assistance. This comes after a tense period where the USDA had declared it would not fund SNAP amid the shutdown snafu, but legal actions and a judicial order, and even a Supreme Court pause, juggled the fates of millions, until now, Colorado resumed full benefits after the overturning of the temporary shut-off.
CDHS Executive Director Michelle Barnes expressed relief, saying, "After weeks of uncertainty, Coloradans will finally have critical access to food back. No Coloradans should ever have to be in a position where they go hungry or are unsure of where their next meal is coming from," as per the Colorado Governor's Office. This sentiment underscores the value of the SNAP program, which was further supported by the state's actions during the shutdown. Governor Jared Polis secured $10 million in emergency funding to prop up food banks across Colorado, providing essential aid to those faced with hunger.
