The spirit of giving was alive and well in San Antonio this past weekend as comedian Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias turned a pop-up show into a substantial food drive for the San Antonio Food Bank. Playing to a packed house at the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club, fans were asked to bring in five cans of food per person to gain entry to the event. The response was overwhelming, and KSAT reports that an impressive haul of 16,000 pounds of canned goods was the end result of this generous stipulation.
Spectators, eager to catch a glimpse of Iglesias and support a good cause, lined up in droves with donations in hand. The show quickly reached its capacity of 350 people, but that did not deter many from contributing. As one man who stayed behind to help at the event told Fox San Antonio, "We're the last ones here, it's all good though-San Antonio needs this and it's a good cause." Their efforts were not in vain, for the laughter from within was paralleled by the impact they had made, assembling outside, carrying food to sustain their neighbors.
These acts of charity come at a critical time, as many in Bexar County face the stark reality of a government shutdown and cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Iglesias' show provided not just an evening of comedy, but a lifeline for hundreds of families. One couple, speaking to KSAT, said they were affected by the government shutdown themselves and expressed appreciation for the comedian's efforts: “We’re one of the families affected by (the government shutdown), and this is something great.”
Some fans even took their support a step further, volunteering at the food bank after donating their goods. A volunteer recounted to KSAT, "By the time I got here it was way overpacked and then the food bank only had like one or two people so I was like, ‘You know what, I’ll donate my cans and help out.’ I’m glad I did." As tickets ran out, the volunteers' assistance was meaningful, whereas the food bank was under-resourced in people power.
