The Sacramento Zoo welcomes Dan Simon as its new CEO, taking the helm at a pivotal moment for the nearly century-old institution with ambitions to expand and evolve in the coming years. Simon, who brings over 18 years of leadership experience from various zoological organizations, is set to take charge in early December, as reported by FOX40.

As he steps into this role, Simon inherits the task of advancing the zoo's expansion plans, which have hovered in uncertainty after a move to a larger facility in Elk Grove was discarded last spring. The zoo now aims to develop on adjacent land, a strategy that Simon underscores as critical for both the institution's growth and the maintenance of the high standards required for reaccreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). "If we have that extra space, that's going to play a big role in what we think about is going to be the next thing for the Sacramento Zoo," Simon told CBS News Sacramento.

During his tenure at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Texas, Simon's work was characterized by his strategic leadership and project management skills. His credentials include a bachelor's degree in Park Management and an MBA with a concentration in Project Management, all of which positioned him as the top candidate for Sacramento's zoo leadership. Elizabeth Stallard, President of the Board of Trustees, endorsed Simon's appointment, stating that he is "ideally suited to guide the Sacramento Zoo into its next chapter," according to the information shared by FOX40.

Simon's affection for his favorite animal, the giraffe, reflects his broader dedication to animal welfare and conservation—a focus that aligns with the zoo's core mission. He is set to oversee a workforce of about 100 employees, catering to more than 300 animals from 90 different species. Ongoing initiatives like the enhancement of the orangutan exhibit demonstrate the zoo's commitment to not just maintain, but improve habitats under its care. Simon told CBS News Sacramento, "My goal would be to have something new to see at the zoo every year so it gives families and all of our guests a reason to come back."

The changes at the Sacramento Zoo under the new CEO occur against the backdrop of the institution's pursuit of educational, recreational, and conservation goals. "Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work with organizations that connect people with wildlife and inspire conservation action," Simon told FOX40, indicating his readiness to continue and expand on this pursuit alongside Sacramento's community and zoo team.
